Korean Placement Test January 2014

General facts:
The placement test consists of two parts: reading/writing and an oral interview. The reading/writing test normally takes 90 minutes and an oral interview is 5-7 minutes long. There are two types of the test. For students who wish to fulfill their language requirement, please take “Type E”. For students who wish to take Korean course, please take “Type P”

When:

Friday, January 10, 2014.

Reading/writing: 10:00-12:00pm 

Oral interview: 1:00-3:00pm (individually done)

UVa Students Win Awards at the 2013 Jiangsu Cup

On Sunday, October 27th, several of our students traveled to George Washington University with Professor Hsin-hsin Liang and visiting instructor Wenyi Chu to compete in the Jiangsu Cup speech competition. The contest involved giving a 1 minute self-introduction, a 3 minute speech, and a 4 minute Q&A in Chinese.

Our students did very well, winning the following awards:

Introducing Distinguished Major: Maggie Rank

Students who enroll in DEAL’s Distinguished Majors Program automatically become eligible for the annual Mastercard Scholarship, established by Mrs. Rebecca George and Mr. H. Eugene Lockhardt, Jr. to encourage the study of Asia. The scholarship is awarded based on merit as evidenced by excellence in language study and creative approaches to Asia-related topics.

Introducing Distinguished Major: Ida Knox

Recently enrolled in the Chinese Distinguished Major Program, Ida is a double major in Philosophy and Chinese Language and Literature. She’s already finished all the requirements for the Chinese major, so she decided to challenge herself by taking on a Distinguished Major thesis at UVA in her final year. She plans to focus on translating works by fiction writer and dramatist Su Qing, chiefly those which give her views on the roles played by sex and women in China of the 1940s.

Introducing Distinguished Major Jennifer Murray

Rising fourth year student Jennifer Murray has already completed the requirements for her Chinese major, and so has decided to take on the additional challenge of a Distinguished Major program in Chinese. For her project, she has chosen the writings of Daoist sage Zhuangzi. She plans to prepare to work with primary materials on Zhuangzi by reading secondary scholarship and sampling the numerous English translations over summer break. In the Fall she will select the passages that she wishes to focus on and read them under the guidance of DMP advisor Professor Anne Kinney.

Chinese Program to Receive Technology Upgrade with "Hybrid Challenge" Grant

Congratulations are due to Professor Ran Zhao for receiving President Sullivan's $10,000 "Hybrid Challenge" grant to flip Chinese 1010 into a hybrid technology-enhanced course as a pilot for the Chinese Language Program and other language programs in DEAL. She is only one of ten recipients university-wide.

Japan Week 2013 Marks Sixth Successful Year for Much Anticipated Annual Festival

Japan Week began in 2008 as a collective effort between the UVA Japanese Language program and UVA student organizations, high school Japanese programs, and Japanese related groups in the Charlottesville community. It aimed to promote Japanese language and culture to the Charlottesville community, as well as to people living in the surrounding areas. The UVA Japanese program served as the leader of this outreach initiative.
