Korea Week Featured in UVA Today

DEALLC Professor Susie Kim is interviewed by UVA Today regarding the exciting Korea Week events commencing on grounds today, November 1, 2012. Regarding today's talk by Indiana University Professor Michael Robinson, "Understanding North and South Korea through Its 'System' of Division", taking place at 3:30 p.m. in the Wilson Hall auditorium, Kim says "“He’s really one of the senior statesmen of this type of scholarship,” Kim said of Robinson.

UVA ROTC Cadet and DEALLC Chinese Major Joseph W. Riley Honored

Cadet Riley was recently ranked in the top 10 on ROTC's Order of Merit list. The list is selected from among 5,579 cadets nationwide. In the past, Riley has been selected as a Truman Scholar, Jefferson Scholar, Echols Scholar and a Lawn resident, and is currently a Rhodes Scholar candidate.

Professor Laughlin Interviewed on PBS Concerning Nobel Prize-Winning Chinese Novelist Mo Yan

DEALLC's Weedon Chair in Asian Studies, Professor Charles Laughlin, was interviewed by the PBS Newshour on October 11 regarding the literary legacy of this year's recipient of the Nobel Prize in literature, Chinese novelist Mo Yan.

UVA in Shanghai Selected for Light Fellowship Language Program

The UVA in Shanghai Intensive Summer Chinese Language Program, hosted by East China Normal University, has been selected by Yale University’s prestigious Light Fellowship as a destination site for language study utilizing Light Fellowship funding. For the past fifteen years, the Light Fellowship has funded hundreds of promising Yale students for language study in China, Japan and Korea.

2012 CLTA-VA Pedagogy Workshop Held

The Chinese Language Teachers Association of Virginia held their annual workshop, entitled "Teaching Chinese Grammar in the Post-Methods Era", at UVA's Newcomb Hall on October 13. The keynote speaker was Prof. Jianhua Bai of the Chinese language summer program at Middlebury College. Afternoon workshops were led by UVA's own Profs. Miao-fen Tseng and Hsin-Hsin Liang. J-GAP Second One-day Workshop Report

A total of 24 enthusiastic Japanese teachers and professors representing different regions of the Mid-Atlantic area took the opportunity to report on their collaborative projects, that had been initiated at the January J-GAP (Japanese Global Articulation Project), at a second workshop held at UVa's Gibson Hall on August 25, 2012.  After presenting their 12 individual project reports, the participants were divided into small groups and exchanged ideas for solving various articulation issues.
